What Is Generative Art?
Generative art is artwork created by an autonomous system. Instead of the artist drawing every line, they design a set of rules โ an algorithm, a procedure, or a mathematical system โ and let that system produce the visual output. The artist's role shifts from making the image to designing the system that makes the image.
The term was popularized in the 1960s, when artists like Frieder Nake, Georg Nees, and Vera Molnรกr began using early computers to generate drawings from algorithms. But the underlying idea is much older: Islamic geometric patterns, Celtic knotwork, and even the repeating motifs of classical ornament are all generated by following rules.
How Generative Art Works
A generative art system typically has three components:
- Inputs โ seeds, parameters, or random values that feed the system
- Rules โ the algorithm that transforms inputs into visual elements
- Output โ the resulting image, animation, or interactive experience
In Espiralito, the inputs are a numeric seed and a set of parameters (dot count, spacing, symmetry, palette, effects). The rules are the mathematical formulas that place shapes along a spiral path. The output is the artwork you see on the canvas.
Generative Art vs AI Art
Generative art is often confused with AI-generated art, but they are fundamentally different:
- Generative art uses explicit, deterministic rules. Every output can be traced back to its inputs. The same inputs always produce the same output.
- AI art uses neural networks trained on large datasets. The "rules" are learned from data, not designed, and outputs are typically not reproducible from a simple seed.
This distinction matters for artists. With generative art, you can share a URL and know that anyone who opens it sees the exact same artwork. With AI art, the same prompt can produce different results each time.
Why Artists Use Generative Systems
Generative approaches offer several creative advantages:
